Ancient Bell
The now semi-derelict Old St. Michael’s Church Hall in Crieff was built on the site of the original 1199 Parish Church of Crieff and the town is indeed fortunate that a survivor from the old church is a 50cm high church bell dated 1605. The Community Council is in the process of accepting custody of the bell to ensure its continued survival and it will probably be housed in the new museum in the old town hall — when it becomes operational later this year.
There’s quite a bit of excitement in some circles at the prospect of incorporating the ancient bell into modern events in Crieff: perhaps ringing in the New Year in James Square or triggering the Christmas lights switch-on or having a special Ancient Bell race at Crieff Highland Gathering for the youngsters — first to finish the race and ring the bell! Even a tourist attraction and fund-raiser “Ring Crieff’s ancient bell – Just £1” with all income going to a favourite charity.
